About Glancy’s No.1 Penetrating Oil
Glancy’s No.1 Penetrating Oil is an ultra penetrating oil for wood finishing. Formulated from high purity natural materials to allow for an oil that can penetrate deep into the wood fibers and completely saturate the wood with only a single coat. This will create a final finish built from within the wood fibers that highlights and enhances the natural color, grain and chatoyance of a piece of wood. The need for only a single coat and an 8hr dry time allows for a quick and easy user friendly application that will result in a superior finish.
When to use this:
- On fine furniture, heirloom projects, or hardwoods where you want to enrich the grain with a warm, natural look.
- For interior pieces like tabletops, chairs, and cabinetry that need a deeper-penetrating oil finish.
- When you want a hand-rubbed finish that’s easy to apply and recoat without sanding.
- For users who are comfortable using a solvent-based finish in a well-ventilated space.
Why choose it:
- You only want to apply once!
- Ready for the next step in about eight hours!
- Glancy’s No. 1 is a traditional oil-and-resin blend that penetrates deeply and leaves a soft luster on bare wood.
- Ideal when you want a finish that enhances color and grain without building a heavy film — just be aware it contains mineral spirits, so it’s not low-VOC.
Features
- Excellent for all wood types: furniture, turned work, instruments, hand tools, and more.
- Only a single coat required in most situations.
- Deeply saturating: penetrates into the wood fibers instead of sitting on the surface.
- Enhances natural color and boosts the wood’s natural chatoyance in the final finish.
- Easy to apply with a cloth, brush, roller, or buffing pad.
- Proudly designed, manufactured, and bottled in the USA.
Application Instructions
For best results, apply Glancy’s No.1 to untreated bare wood.
1. Surface prep
- Sand your piece to your final grit (typically 180–320, depending on the project).
- Remove all dust with a vacuum and/or tack cloth.
- If you’re working on a special piece, test the oil on a scrap or a hidden area first to confirm the look.
2. Mix and apply
- Shake the bottle well before each use to fully blend the ingredients.
- In a dry, well-ventilated area, apply a liberal, wet coat using a lint-free cloth, brush, roller, or buffing pad.
- Make sure the entire surface is evenly covered and allowed to fully saturate the wood. Re-wet any areas that soak in faster so the surface stays uniformly wet during the soak time.
3. Let it penetrate
- Allow the oil to sit on the surface for at least 10 minutes so it can penetrate deep into the wood fibers.
- Do not let it sit long enough to become tacky or start to skin over.
4. Wipe off all excess
- Before the finish turns tacky, wipe off all excess oil with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- The surface should feel dry to the touch with no shiny wet spots, puddles, or oily residue left on top. Any oil left sitting on the surface can lead to a soft or sticky finish.
5. Dry time
- Allow the piece to dry approximately 8 hours at 68–72°F (20–22°C) in a dust-free, well-ventilated area.
- Cooler temperatures or higher humidity may extend dry time; when in doubt, give it extra time.
6. Level and refine
- Once the surface is completely dry, you can:
- Lightly sand with a high-grit sandpaper (e.g. 400–600), or
- Buff with 0000 steel wool for a smooth, even feel and gentle sheen.
7. Topcoat options
- Grand Finishes' wood wax is an excellent follow-up for a soft, hand-rubbed luster and added protection.
- You can also topcoat with your preferred hard finish (shellac, polyurethane, etc.) once the oil is fully dry and no longer exuding any residue.
